One-Page Summary

At an outdoor funeral, Sandy and her daughter Carmen approach a closed casket. What they read stops them cold. Before the truth is revealed, the story returns to Nashville in 1975, to a young mother with dreams of singing and the man whose charm will change her life.

When Sandy meets Gino, he is funny, confident, and full of excitement. She falls in love, imagining a future filled with music, adventure, and a happy family. But beneath his charm lies a volatile temper and a growing need to control her. With two young children, little money, and few places to turn, Sandy finds herself caught between the man she loves and the man she fears.

Their life together takes them across the country, from Nashville to California, Phoenix, Seattle, and eventually Dallas. Along the way, restaurant jobs, sudden moves, and promises of fresh starts keep hope alive. There are good times, laughter, and moments when Sandy believes they might finally become the family she has always wanted. Then jealousy, violence, drugs, and theft pull them back into chaos.

Music offers Sandy a glimpse of another life. Performing with a rock band gives her a voice, confidence, and a chance to reclaim her dream. When that dream falls apart, she must begin again in Dallas, where a job at a Ford dealership brings her into the life of Jim, a former Marine whose quiet kindness slowly earns her trust.

Their friendship grows into love, showing Sandy what it feels like to be valued and cared for. But building a future with Jim means trying to escape Gino’s control, and facing the danger that comes with leaving.

As Gino’s crimes lead to arrests, rehabilitation, and imprisonment, the damage reaches far beyond their marriage. Carmen and Jason struggle with the consequences of a childhood shaped by fear and instability. Sandy fights to help her children while trying to find safety herself. Leaving Gino cannot undo everything they have endured, and his influence continues to threaten the family she is desperate to protect.

The story ultimately returns to the funeral, where a shocking discovery exposes one final deception.

The Writer Behind the Screenplay

Sandra Wilson in a white suit at her writing desk with her book This Masquerade, The True Story

For Sandra Wilson, This Masquerade is a story she lived before she ever put it on the page. Adapting her memoir into a screenplay gave her a way to bring audiences inside a marriage where charm and laughter could give way to fear, and where leaving meant risking everything to begin again.

Sandra writes with the perspective of a woman who understands how love, hope, and responsibility for children can keep someone holding on. Her story makes room for the good days, the painful choices, and the humor that helped her endure.

Her years onstage with Sandy Love and Images and Mistress, along with her performances as Marilyn Monroe and Dolly Parton, nurtured her love of storytelling and performance. That creative spirit carries into a screenplay built around complicated relationships, family struggles, and the possibility of finding love again.

Through This Masquerade, Sandra hopes to reach those who have lived behind a brave face while keeping painful secrets, and those who have wondered why leaving is so difficult.
